An Invitation From the Director – Join Us on the Sugar Detox Challenge
Hi friends and fellow sugar lovers, Sugar is great, I agree, but it is way overused and abused and it is a key element in why our nation is getting sicker every year. As a mom, I am concerned about the amount of sugar that is swirling around my two girls. As a citizen, I am concerned about the health of my country and the costs associated with our increasing sugar consumption. As a fitness expert, I am concerned about the lack of industry awareness, research and information available to both health educators/leaders and the public on the effects of too much sugar in our diets. As a human, I am concerned for our species as we continue to poison ourselves and our fellow man as the “western diet” of sugary, processed and fast foods take over worldwide.
Just a few Sugar Science Facts from UCSF that should scare the pants off of you:
- Added sugar is in 74% of our packaged foods.
- Scientific evidence shows too much added sugar, over time, is linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, lipid problems, and hypertension; all of which are part of what is called Metabolic Syndrome.
- Evidence is also mounting that high levels of sugar consumption can fuel some cancers and is linked to inflammation, dementia or Alzheimer’s and more rapid aging.
- 31% of American adults and 13% of kids suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
- 75% of health care costs are from metabolic syndrome diseases. – This is not just about overweight people. 20% of obese people have a healthy metabolism, and 40% of skinny people actually have the metabolic diseases caused by sugar consumption. That means 60% of the entire US population is suffering from metabolic diseases.
I, as a mom, citizen, educator and human, have a responsibility to act, and so do you. Morally and socially, we have no other choice but to address this issue right now. Children are now expected to live shorter lives than their parents, and millions of them do not have access to healthy foods. They live in “food desserts” where an apple is hard to come by, and the local convenience store only provides them with sugary, packaged options.
Our general population is overweight, tired, and whether they know it or not, sick from consuming an average of nearly 66 pounds of added sugar per person, every year according to the Sugar Science Institute. That is 19.5 teaspoons (82 grams) of sugar every day. Financially, as a country, we need to act now as this problem has the potential to bankrupt us. 75% of health care costs are from the metabolic syndrome diseases I just listed, and Dr. Robert Lustig, MD, among other leaders in the Sugar War, states that obesity reform, might be more effective than health care reform.
If I can be part of the solution to this problem, I am going to do everything in my power to do so. So what can we do?
Let’s start at the micro level. As an individual, we need to stay our sugar consumption. It has been mentioned that sugar is essentially a seasoning, meant to be enjoyed in very small amounts. Much like cinnamon or nutmeg. Can you imagine eating that much cinnamon? The body also digests sugar (the fructose) through the liver, just like alcohol, and so also like alcohol, only very little of this toxin can be properly processed without dire consequences. Sugar should be consumed in as cautionary a manner as alcohol – enjoyed in very small amounts and treated as a toxin.
I am challenging you to reconsider what sugar looks like in your life. I am challenging you to a 10 day sugar elimination, a detox if you would like to call it that. And in fact, now a lot of research is pointing to sugar as a highly addictive toxin that affects the brain much like cocaine, and centers are emerging all over the world to help people detox off of sugar and recover from sugar addiction.
The 10 Day Challenge looks like this:
– 5 days of developing awareness and slowly cutting back, followed by 0 (zero) sugar for 5 days.
– After the 10 days, you will take a thoughtful look at what sugar consumption means for you going forward, and for those that want extra support, there is a free three month follow-up program that will guide you through the journey that make sense for you.
At a macro, or much larger level, we need to make changes as a nation and as a world. Some countries are way ahead of us in the United States. The United Kingdom has passed a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks, which is set to begin from April 2018, and is implementing a 20% sugar reduction across nine food categories that children eat the most. Policy needs to change, and for that to happen, minds need to be changed, and that all takes money. The 505 Project, as a social entrepreneurship experiment, is here to further our SOS cause and to donate money to people that can actually make a difference on a large level both in our government and in our health system.
I want this Challenge / Movement to be preventive medicine for us all – individually and collectively. Let’s do this together. Let’s change our own stories first, and then work on rewriting our national and worldwide stories.
